A restaurant that isn't warm or welcoming. Hostess, wait staff afraid to smile...to go along with no personal warmth there's no furnace warmth. Place is frigid inside. Had to wear my coat and hat while eating. Food is tasteless and bland. I guess the chef/cook never heard of salt and pepper. For the food to be flavorful, it has to be added during the cooking process, not as an afterthought at the table. This place has too many issues with front of house, staff, air temp and kitchen for me to return.

I'm very picky about breakfast and this place never lets me down. I have to admit I only ever get the Farmer's breakfast, but it's always delicious. The pancakes are huge and the hash browns are crispy on top. Great country style atmosphere.

This is my go-to place for corned beef hash. Not the fancy chunky homemade kind, but the mushy and crispy hash with sunny-side up eggs and rye toast that I crave because it's what I grew up with. So much so I came two mornings in a row and cleaned the plate both times :) The hash had a nice crust from the griddle and they kept my coffee filled. A nice casual place for breakfast if you're wanting standard breakfast offerings. I came late morning on weekdays and was seated easily. Prepare to wait early morning or on the weekends.

Since there was major construction going on in front of the restaurant and they were not busy, we thought they would appreciate some unexpected business - however the staff was rude and rather indifferent. I was surprised especially given the aforementioned circumstances.

Breakfast place that needs a bit of freshening up. The food is your basic egg, hash brown, bacon, etc. The pancakes are the big draw. They are huge and fluffy. Just a heads up, they have an almond flavored syrup that is not for everyone. I go here because it is close but I would love to see some more creative options on the menu.

This would be a great opportunity for someone willing to work on training the staff to be warm and engaging, update the decor, but most of all to treat the food more like a tool to make you want to come back. Sadly I will not be back, but I hope this helps motivate change.

This place hasn't been updated in over ten years, and the food has never gotten better. I like how it is family run but nothing on here is inspired. I have a sensitive stomach so I always end up slightly sick after a visit if it is something made from eggs (possibly from the oil they use on the grill). They do have great coffee though and are constantly refilling your mug for you. Service is a mixed bag. If you want some place that is inexpensive and quiet, come here. Lunch is pretty slow for them and breakfast is decent, but don't expect creativity in the dishes.

In town for business.. found this on Yelp. One of the most delicious breakfast helpings I've had. Coffee was great. Pancakes tasted funny, but I'm more of a waffle guy. Pancakes were ridiculously enormous. Sausages and hash browns were by far the best I've had outside a home. OJ was amazingly fresh. Waitress was attentive and very hospitable. Entire meal ran me around 10 bucks.. well worth a visit.

Unimpressed. Food was just ok. Service was lacking. Definitely better places around with better service.

Great simple foods with a home style atmosphere. Casual and comfortable.

The coffee is delicious, and the pancakes are among the best I've had. Bring your appetite - the portions are huge. Nice, cozy atmosphere with great service.

Not the place for an avant garde meal, but if you need a big filling breakfast, then The Gathering Place is the correct pick! My mom's one pancake was huge - it filled the entire plate. My omelette was the largest I'd ever seen, and very tasty, as well.

I have only been here for breakfast, though I am sure their lunch menu is just as good. Hazelnut coffee is fantastic, and you can't go wrong with whatever you choose for food. Everything is big, delicious, made from scratch (including the bread). Lots of variety, the waitstaff is always super friendly. Food comes out quick and hot. Make sure to block out a couple hours in your schedule- a nap is pretty much essential after filling up here.

I've only had one bad dish here and they were very nice about taking it back and giving me a replacement (I got blueberry pancakes with odd tasting blueberries in them). I've eaten egg dishes, pancakes, and french toast at the Gathering Place and all were absolutely delicious. The pancakes are about half an inch thick; one will fill you up completely. The syrup is really rich and delicious. It tastes like real maple syrup with honey in it. The wait staff is always friendly and attentive, even when the restaurant is busy.

Great place for a business breakfast. Food was good and hot, service was attentive but not overbearing, coffee was excellent. Great atmosphere with plenty of elbow room. I had sausage patties, hash browns and toast, my guest had an omelet. Food was brought out in a very reasonable amount of time. I would go there again.

My husband and I had brunch here on a Sunday. We did not have to wait for a table. The restaurant is an old house (I think?) and is actually pretty big and appears to be able to hold a lot of people, including some bigger groups. I ordered steak and eggs and my husband had a Belgian waffle, eggs, and hash brown potatoes. I ordered decaf and he had regular coffee and I had several cups - - so it was good. I read several online reviews before deciding to try The Gathering Place. Pretty much every review I read said the portions were super giant and made to share. That being said, I finished ALL of my 8 oz steak, 2 sunny side up eggs, and hash brown potatoes (strings, not cubed) and almost all of my toast (2 slices aka 4 triangles). I also had a couple bites of my husbands waffle, which was pretty good (had strawberries and whipped cream). He said the waffle wasn't as good as six-one-six at the JW, but there isn't really a comparison between the two restaurants. I would say the food portions were generous, but I didn't need to share. My husband said the servings seemed pretty typical for America. The syrup is homemade and very interesting...sort of a vanilla honey flavor. It was a nice change. The breads are homemade and tasted good (nothing to write home about). I enjoyed my steak, although it was probably medium-well to well, not medium like I requested it. It was surprisingly still really tasty! The waitstaff was very friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was very country/ farm/ homestyle/ kitschy....think green pineapple stencils on the wall circa 1988. Good comfort food in a comfy, casual atmosphere.

Came to Grand Rapids this weekend to visit some relatives and had a chance to eat here for breakfast. It was awesome. They were pretty busy, as it was Sunday morning breakfast, but everyone was nice. The place itself is kind of a renovated old house type design with matching decorations and original wood floor - kind of kitschy. The food took a little longer than I would have normally expected for breakfast but the meal more than made up for it. I got the farmer's breakfast: 2 eggs, hash browns, 3 sausage, 2 pancakes. The pancakes were gigantic, there's no way one human should be able to eat them. The coffee was excellent. Everything was really delicious! I would definitely like to go back next time I'm in town.

Delicious, inexpensive breakfast. Lots of choices for omelette fillings, including portabello mushrooms, feta, and chorizo. Fabulous and huge! The toast that came with it was thick and tasted very fresh. The bacon was perfectly crisped, and the pancakes are very fluffy. Attentive service and a homey atmosphere. We'll definitely be back.

Overall I enjoyed the experience. The service was good and the food was above average. The atmosphere of the dining room is quite nice, especially for the amount of people they seat in the dining room. The menu options were diverse and the portions were quite large. The one thing that affected my rating was the time it took for the food to come out. Th Gathering Place is a breakfast joint and a 30+ min ticket on 3 omelets is too long. One of them came out a little cooler than would be preferred. I would go back, but I don't think it would be my first choice.
